買ったのは五六年前なのだけれども、当時は英語があまりにもむつかしく感じられて、とても読めたものではなかった。
「当時は」なんていうと、今はスラスラ読めるみたいだが、もちろんそうではなくて、わかったふりをしてずんずん読んでいる。

こういう文章がえんえんと続くのだから、英語の勉強をはじめた当時、読めるはずがない。アメリカに帰国してからは推理小説作家として盛名を馳せたそうだけれど、そっちの方も、こういう込み入った文章なのだろうか。
